<item><title>WABA Decembathon Details</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/waba_decembathon_details/42</link>
<description>

&#38;nbsp;

It&#38;#39;s time once again for the annual WABA December meet in Mt. Claremont with all the associated festivities. You can download a flyer to promote this event here.
So here&#38;#39;s the low-down on this year&#38;#39;s Decembathon!

Extended Hours
The meet will be on Saturday, December 12th. Like last year, we&#38;#39;ll be starting up a little earlier and running into the evening (10am - 8pm). If you don&#38;#39;t already know, the location is:

Mount Claremont Community Centre
Montgomery Ave.
Mt. Claremont.

Entry to the Decembathon is $5 unless this is your first visit or you are a member - in which case it&#38;#39;s a free event. That&#38;#39;s right - free entry for members (There&#38;#39;s your $5 worth right there!!!)

Sorry! Sliders Tournament
This year we&#38;#39;re running a Sorry! Sliders knockout tournament with the grand prize being a copy of this great family dexterity game. Sorry! Sliders is quick and easy-to-learn and there will be teachers on hand to show you the ropes if you haven&#38;#39;t played before. The tournament starts at 12pm and you will need to register before then - there will be a sign-up sheet at the door.

Decathlon Dice-Off
This will be the second year we&#38;#39;ve run this event - can you beat last year&#38;#39;s high score? At any time during the day, you can try your hand at the quick and easy dice game, Decathlon by Reiner Knizia. There&#38;#39;s a small prize for the high score of the day but the real pleasure will come from seeing if you can beat Jared&#38;#39;s 2008 record!

Prize Table
Got games (or game-related gifts) lying around the house that aren&#38;#39;t getting played? Bring them in and put them on the prize table. At 3pm, the names of everyone who has placed something on the prize table will be drawn from a hat, with each person selecting something to take away. Think of it as a not-so-secret Santa...

Fische Fluppe Frikadellen
Once again we&#38;#39;ll be running a 15 player version of Freidemann Freise&#38;#39;s Fische Fluppe Frikadellen (You can read about last year&#38;#39;s game here). This fun game of market manipulation is played over three separate tables with a &#38;#39;boat&#38;#39; mechanism to take you from table to table. If you want to experience this unique game as it should be played, drop Stew an email at s.woods@westnet.com.au to reserve your place (Starts at 1pm)

Raffle Draws
There will be three raffle draws on the big day. As usual, current members (and those who become members on the day) will recieve an extra ticket. Prizes include Milsims vouchers and recent release games like Chaos in the Old World and Endeavour. Note: Raffle draws will be at 12pm, 3pm &#38;amp; 7pm and you must be present to claim a prize (or organise to have someone claim it for you).

Game Play
Like last year, we&#38;#39;ll be recording each game played for posterity. In 2008 we managed a total of 44 games played throughout the day...come along and help beat this record!

So there you have it - what looks set to be a fun day and a good time to invite some new players along for the ride.

See you on the 12th...

Cheers
Stew

<item><title>WABA and Regional Gamers</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/waba_and_regional_gamers/39</link>
<description>
Now that our Perth-based events are running along nicely, it seems only fair for the West Australian Boardgaming Association to reach out to gamers in the more far flung regions of our enormous state.

To this end, we have now implemented forums specifically for gamers in regional WA to get in touch with each other. (See the Regional Gamers and Groups link on the left menu).

So, if you know of anyone living outside the confines of the metro area, please let them know about this addition to the site.

<item><title>WABA in Thornlie - Another Success!</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/waba_in_thornlie_-_another_success/37</link>
<description>I would like to thank the 20 people who joined in and made our first
day a great success. Considering the long weekend, AFL Grand Final and
the first day of the Royal Show the turn out was very good.

Lots of quality games were taught and played with 5 new members joining the fold!

If we continue to get strong support and a little growth we should be set to play games twice a month!

We
had a special raffle for our first event with a copy of Dominion:
Intrigue up for grabs.(Thanks to Jason and Tactics for helping out with
the prize at the last minute :)

The winner of the raffle was
Craig Menner. Congratulations!

So all in all a great start. If you have any feedback or suggestions please let us know!

Unfortunately the hall is booked for October so our next WABA South meet will be in November.

Thanks for all your support,

Tim.

Castle Glen Pavilion
338 Discovery Drive
THORNLIE

More details of how to get to the event can be found here .

<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/booragoonmelville_gaming_becomes_a_regular_venue/22</link>
<description>
Well, hopefully as you&#38;#39;ll notice on the left we&#38;#39;ve added a list of upcoming events.

In part this is due to the fact that the Melville games club has now become a regular venue for WABA gaming.
The venue is pleasant, the people even more so, and the price of admission is perfect.

&#38;nbsp;As far as I know this will be running fortnightly, so please come along...

Call for Volunteers !
City of Stirling are interested in running some introduction to euro/family games in the upcoming school holidays (July 4-19).
There are six libraries in the city, and they&#38;#39;d like to run a session at each...

So we&#38;#39;re looking for volunteers to help out
At
the moment we&#38;#39;re looking for folks who can spare 2 or more hours on any
day to teach and play with kids and families (age 10+) - let me know
what you can commit to and we can let the city know if we can or can&#38;#39;t
do this.

<item><title>Gaming in Booragoon - A Mission for WABA </title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/gaming_in_booragoon_-_a_mission_for_waba__/14</link>
<description>
Hi Folks,
As some of you may know, we&#38;#39;ve been approached by Melville Council.
They
currently run a fortnightly games group in Booragoon whose mandate is
to provide a gaming venue for young people 15-25 years of age.
Currently, this means a focus on CCGs, RPGs and miniatures, but they&#38;#39;re
pretty open to any forms of gaming and age groups.

Consequently, they&#38;#39;ve asked us if we&#38;#39;d like to do some Eurogames stuff down there

Now,
how we might go about this I&#38;#39;m not really sure but, for the moment,
we&#38;#39;ve come to an agreement to have a trial day on Sunday May 3rd and
see where things go from there...

I see a few possible outcomes:

1. This is a one-off and we decide it doesn&#38;#39;t suit us
2. There&#38;#39;s scope here - maybe we can drop in once every couple of months and enlist new gamers
3. The set up is perfect and we can run WABA meets there

&#38;nbsp;

The club runs from 1pm - 6pm and is held at:

City of Melville Civic Centre Main Hall
10 Almondbury Rd
Booragoon.

So, how about it?

If you&#38;#39;d be interested in going along, please email me at s.woods@westnet.com.au

cheers
Stew

<item><title>Easter Gaming at 'Swancon' 2009 </title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/easter_gaming_at_swancon_2009__/13</link>
<description>
Hi all
as briefly mentioned at last Saturday&#38;#39;s EGF, I&#38;#39;m
coordinating the gaming stream at this year&#38;#39;s Perth Science Fiction
Convention &#38;#39;Swancon&#38;#39;.
The convention runs over the Easter
weekend (April 9-13) and will be held at the All Seasons Perth, 15
Robinson Avenue, Northbridge. You can read my carefully crafted blurb
at http://2009.swancon.com.au/gaming.

My purpose in promoting this via WABA is twofold :

1. I figure y&#38;#39;all might be up for some gaming !
2. I&#38;#39;m in need of some friendly volunteers to help teach boardgames to casual and new gamers.

As
you&#38;#39;ll see from the blurb, the two main gaming days are Friday and
Sunday (I carefully avoided clashing with the EGF on Saturday).
Admission to the con on Friday is only $20 - so I&#38;#39;m hoping this will
encourage people to come along and game - all day and night if you feel
like it !

In addition, I can get up to 3-4 volunteers in for
free at any one time. I hope that this will allow me to create a roster
of helpers who can each teach for a couple of hours at a time,
especially between 10AM and 6PM.

Also of note

- on
Monday morning (10AM-12NOON) we&#38;#39;re having a bash at setting an
Australian Wings of War record for number of planes on a table. A more
the merrier event for those who love the game - especially if you own a
few planes !

- each evening we&#38;#39;re hosting &#38;#39;monster games&#38;#39; - the
big, long games that take 3+ hours. If you&#38;#39;re interested in playing or
- ideally bringing a teaching one of these games, we can find some
players for you.

So, if you&#38;#39;re interested in helping out (or
just turning up to play...) please let me know. Ideally I&#38;#39;d love to
hear when you&#38;#39;d be available and what kind of games you can bring or
teach - you can email me at Terry.Chilvers@sjog.org.au

Needless to say, if WABA give this event good support we may see some benefits in terms of new gamers.

<item><title>February Bushfire Fundraiser Results</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/february_bushfire_fundraiser_results/12</link>
<description>
To offer support for those dealing with the tragedy of the recent
bushfires in Victoria, we did two things to raise funds for the Red
Cross Bushfires Appeal at the WABGA February EuroGamesFest.

&#38;nbsp;TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED TO DONATE: $776

Donate Entry Fees
The
first thing was that all entry money on the day would be donated. One
of the good things about this was that we had a number of first time
visitors (who usually don&#38;#39;t have to pay the $5 entry fee) pay $5 just
so it could be donated. The entry fee amount raised was $285.

Silent Auction
The
second thing was the silent auction of a number of donated games. The
games and their final sale price is listed below (mainly for the
benefit of those that had to leave early and don&#38;#39;t know how much the
games were sold for). The silent auction amount raised was was $491.

Before
the list - thanks to all those that were able to raid their collection
and offer games to be auctioned for the cause. Thanks too to those that
won and contributed the money. And thanks also to those that placed a
bid but were outbid - your bid ensured a higher end price.

GAMES AUCTIONED
221B Baker St $10
Abalone $5
Cabale $12
Chicago Express $105
Galaxy Trucker $100
Guess Who $7
Heroscape $60
Lawless $11
Monty Python and The Holy Grail Collectible Card Game + Bonus Bubble Blower $14
Quiddler $5
Risk: Godstorm $25
Rocketville $21
Sword and Skulls $60
Tally Ho $20
Traders of Genoa $36

(And don&#38;#39;t forget that if you&#38;#39;re not a member, you can always join on the day by simply asking a committee member for a form!)

WABGA GAMES PLAYED RECORD
We
will try and record every game played on the day so it can become the
first official games played in one WABGA day event record.

So,
as you can see, we&#38;#39;re hoping that this months meet will be a little bit
special. Thanks everyone for your continued support of WABGA and the
Eurogamesfest meets.

<item><title>Expanding the WABGA Collection</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/expanding_the_wabga_collection/9</link>
<description>As some of you may know, WABGA (West Australain Boardgaming Association) is slowly putting together a permanent collection of games that can be played by everyone at the monthly meets (and any other events we organise).

Current games in the collection can be found here .

Well, we now need your help in deciding which game to add next.

If you are a member of boardgamegeek, you can go straight to this page to cast your vote as to which game we should purchase next.

If you&#38;#39;re not a member of boardgamegeek, I would recommend registering on the site and then joining the WABGA guild as a way of keeping in touch with what is going on with the organisation.

The poll closes on November 30th so be sure to get your vote in soon.

<item><title>A Thank you from Friends of Hiam</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/a_thank_you_from_friends_of_hiam/8</link>
<description>Earlier this year, Warren was instrumental in organising a games day to aid &#38;#39;Friends of Hiam&#38;#39;, an organisation providing relief to families in East Timor.
The day was a great success in terms of games played, good times had, afternoon teas consumed and, most importantly, funds raised.
Today, we recieved a letter of thanks from the organisation which is clearly addressed to everyone who attended:

Thank you for your generous support in assisting our group to organise a games day fund raising event. The help you have provided will make a great difference to the lives of the families in East Timor. We often overlook how important the little things are to people who have so little to begin with.

With your support, the curse of malnutrition and other preventable diseases can be overcome in time.

With gratitude,

Robyn Pickrell
Convenor

<item><title>Boardgames Australia Announcement</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/boardgames_australia_announcement/7</link>
<description>Boardgames Australia is an organisation set up to provide a set of
reputable awards for Australian gamers and families. One of our key
aims is to promote the growth of the boardgame hobby in Australia.

This is an announcement to say that our forums have officially opened. If you head over to www.boardgamesaustralia.org.au
you will find links to information about our awards, about who we are
and what we are trying to achieve, but most importantly you will also
find a forum where you can share your thoughts, ask questions and talk
about our awards, the boardgame hobby in general and if you are a game
designer (beginning or experienced) there are forums there dedicated
specifically for that!

We hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Giles (and the other members of BGA).

<description>Steve G writes:
Advanced Squad Leader Tournament - 8th &#38;amp; 9th November, 2008
There is a 2 day &#38;quot;Western Front&#38;quot; tourney planned for November, which
will take place at the TACTICS store in London Court. Drop me a line if
interested in participating. Players of all skill levels welcomed and
you can also choose to play for one day only if leave pass is an issue.

Skill
level of players varies, but generally you will need some experience
with guns and vehicles as well as a grasp of Infantry rules.

Format
is undecided as yet, but generally 2 rounds per day of approx 3.5 hours
per round, followed by some drinks and nibbles at the end of each day.

<item><title>Website Open for Business</title>
<link>http://waboardgaming.org/news/latest_news/website_open_for_business/3</link>
<description>Our new look website is here!

On the whole this just duplicates the content from the BGG guild but we
felt it might be a bit less intimidating than the geek as a point of
entry.

But since this is a work in progress, please feel free to let us know what else you would like to see.

...and if you see Steve on Saturday, give him a pat on the back or buy him a Redbull - he deserves it!

Stew
